§How to learn the trainer trade

The coaching profession combines knowledge of the body, the ability to make sensible plans and the talent for communication. Build the foundation with basic anatomy and movement patterns, learn the key training principles, and practice instructing real people. The most important skill is translating theory into something a member can actually and will do.

Important concepts to master

  • 01Large muscle groups and joint movements.
  • 02Basic movement patterns: squat, hip, push, pull, carry.
  • 03Training principles: progression, specificity, recovery, variation, individualization.
  • 04Structure of a training session: warm-up, main part, cool-down.
  • 05Good instruction and team leadership.
  • 06The trainer's role and limits — refer when in doubt.

Good habits and preparation

Always put technique before load, and record members' training so you can see progress and adjust wisely. Meet the member where it is – realistic goals last longer than ambitious plans that aren't followed. Be aware of your professional boundaries and refer to a doctor or other professional when something falls outside the trainer's field.

Where can you read more?

Use the school's and apprenticeship site's teaching material as the primary source for anatomy and programming. Professional organisations and industry associations within fitness and training publish guidance on education, certification and best practice. National health authorities have general recommendations on physical activity that are a good foundation for healthy guidance.
