The history of financial advisory in Denmark
From savings bank to digital banking advisor
When you work as a financial worker today you work in a profession with deep roots. Banks savings banks and insurance companies have for more than a hundred years been part of keeping Danes' finances going and your role builds on a long tradition of managing other people's money with care.
The first savings banks were established to give ordinary people a safe place to put their savings. Cooperative banks emerged in rural society where farmers came together to lend money to each other. The basic idea — that financing is built on trust between people — still lies under everything you do.
§From physical till to screen
For many decades, bank work was primarily counter service. A customer came in, withdrew or deposited cash, and a cashier counted the bills by hand. Accounting was done on paper in large ledgers. It required accuracy, but most was routine.
With ATMs payment cards and online banking simple transactions moved away from the counter. It did not mean there was a need for fewer skilled employees — it meant your work was lifted to advice sales and case processing. The customer no longer comes in to withdraw 500 kroner; the customer comes in because they need to buy a house start a business or understand their pension savings.
§A regulated profession
The financial sector is one of the most regulated areas in society, and there's a good reason for that. When a bank gets into trouble, it doesn't just affect the bank itself, but thousands of customers and the entire economy. Therefore, over time, more and more rules have come about capital, credit assessment and advisory.

| Around the turn of the millennium | Online banking and digital self-service | The customer handles the daily operations themselves |
| Today | Mobile banking, data and stricter regulation | Your role is advice sales and compliance |
When you understand that history you also understand why such high demands are placed precisely on you: accuracy discretion and honesty have always been the very foundation under the financial profession.
