The trades in EUX: what you study and at what level
The composition of professional and general subjects — and the difference from STX
One of the first things that confuses many new EUX students is the course sequence: Which courses do I take, and at what level? Understanding is important because it's the overall course sequence and the courses' levels that determine what your exam gives you access to afterward.
§Two kinds of trade one course
On EUX, you encounter fundamentally two types of subjects, run in one integrated program. There are the profession-oriented subjects that belong to the craft itself, and there are the gymnasium subjects that raise the general level so together it corresponds to a higher secondary education certificate.

§What do skill levels mean?
Academic subjects are divided into levels typically indicated by letters where higher letters correspond to more comprehensive subjects. On EUX a number of subjects are lifted to the levels required for them together to provide general academic competence. This is the difference from an ordinary vocational apprenticeship where the general subjects are kept at a basic level.
§EUX and STX—same study competence, different path
Both EUX and STX provide general university entrance qualifications but reach it by different routes and with different profiles. STX is purely academic and broadly general in tone. EUX is built around a trade and the academic subjects are often chosen to support that specific field.

§Why the trade composition matters
Because some advanced educations require specific subjects at specific levels, it is worth knowing your subject line early. The subject line you get at EUX opens access broadly, but if you already aim for a specific advanced education, it can be worth investigating its specific entrance requirements.
