Linking theory and practice is the key. When you learn about a nutrient or a diet think about how you make it in practice: What raw materials? What portion? How does it taste good? The more you can translate knowledge into concrete food the better you understand the subject.
Also review the hygiene rules until they are solid. Temperature, cold chain and cross-contamination are topics you both need to explain and act on every single day.
