Safety, ESD and quality in electronics production

How you work, when you work as a mobile worker with a vehicle

Safety in electronics production has multiple sides: machinery can pinch and cut, soldering and ovens are very hot, some materials are chemically harmful, and components can be damaged by static or incorrect handling. Good production is safe production. Here is the most important.

§Machine safety — respect for what moves

Production machines move, clamp and can cut. Respect guards and emergency stops, and never remove a safety guard to work faster. When a machine needs to be opened to fix an error or refill, it must be brought to a safe state according to company rules so it cannot start while you have your hands in it. Many serious accidents happen precisely when someone reaches into a running machine.

§Heat and soldering

Ovens, soldering machines and soldering irons get very hot and can cause serious burns and start fires. Know which surfaces and parts are hot, use the right protective equipment and give the equipment time to cool before touching it. Soldering vapours should not be inhaled; there should be extraction or good ventilation where soldering takes place.

§Chemistry and materials

Solder paste, flux and cleaning products can be harmful to health. Know the hazard markings, wear gloves and eye protection where required, and follow the rules for storage and disposal. The safety data sheet tells you how to use a product safely — it is a work tool, not a formality.

§Protect the components — ESD and moisture

Static electricity (ESD) can damage or weaken components without you noticing. Use a grounded wrist strap, antistatic mat, and antistatic packaging, and handle the components according to the rules. Some components are also sensitive to moisture and must be stored and handled specially. Protecting the components is part of the safety – just directed at the product instead of at you.

§Working position and repetitive work

Production can involve many repeated movements and long periods in the same posture, which can wear on body and eyes. Set up your workplace well, change position, take breaks, and use the equipment that exists to ease repetitive work. The body you take care of as a young operator is the one that needs to last your whole working life.

§Quality and traceability

Quality in production is about every item meeting the requirements — not just the first one. It requires control at startup, continuous control during operation, and that you stop and find the cause when an error appears, rather than just scrapping the item. Traceability — knowing which materials, settings and controls belong to a batch — makes it possible to find and limit an error if it appears later. In a trade where errors repeat, system is quality itself.

Safety protects both the operator and the product. A safe, careful production is also a production with high quality.
