The journeyman's exam — how you prepare

The final sub-tests that make you a qualified electrician

After years of alternating school and practice, everything you have learned is brought together in one final exam: the journeyman exam. It is not just a formality — it is proof that you can do what the trade requires, and it gives you your journeyman certificate, the document that makes you a skilled electrician.

§How the test is set up

According to the education ordinance, the final examination consists of two sub-tests, arranged according to the more detailed guidelines in the education's regulations. All students take both sub-tests, whether they continue to a higher level afterwards or finish at level 2. To pass the education at level 2, both sub-tests in the final examination must be passed individually — it is not enough for the average to be approved if one of the sub-tests is failed.

§Who issues the journeyman certificate?

When you have passed it is the professional committee for the education – for electronics and weak current it is Industriens Uddannelser – that issues your journeyman certificate as documentation that you have achieved competence within the education. The journeyman certificate notes which level and specialty you have completed as well as your grade at the final exam. It is this document you will show for the rest of your career as proof of your skilled status.

§Professional: review broadly, not just the newest.

Because the exam comes after a long time of alternating between school and practice, it is easy to have forgotten material from earlier school periods. Set aside time to systematically review basic concepts — voltage, current, resistance, components, diagram reading — alongside the more advanced material from your specialty. An electronics technician who can explain the basics clearly stands stronger in an exam than one who only knows the latest, advanced details by rote.

  • 01Repeat basic concepts and diagram reading, not just the advanced speciality material
  • 02Practice systematic troubleshooting so you work calmly and methodically under time pressure
  • 03Review your safety and first aid certificates — they must be in order
  • 04PLACEHOLDER_3
  • 05Practice documenting as you go, as you would in a real work task

§Practical: make the day predictable

§After the test

Regardless of the result, the journeyman test is not the end of your professional development — it is proof that you have reached a solid, qualified level that you can build on. Many find that the preparation for the test itself, where all the material is gathered and reviewed, gives an overview of the trade that is valuable for the rest of their career.

The journeyman's exam tests not whether you remember everything — it tests whether you can find the answer when it counts.
