Basic concepts in electronics and weak current
Voltage, current, resistance, and the building blocks every circuit is made of
Electronics may seem opaque until you get a handle on a few basic concepts. They recur in everything from a simple circuit to an advanced device. Learn them well and the rest becomes easier.
§Voltage, current, and resistance
Three concepts are foundation. Voltage (measured in volts) is the 'pressure' that drives electricity. Current (measured in amperes) is how much electricity flows. Resistance (measured in ohms) is how much something slows current. Classic comparison is water in pipe: voltage is pressure current is how much water flows resistance is how narrow pipe is. §Direct current and alternating current
Current exists in two basic forms. Direct current (DC) flows the same way all the time, as from a battery — it is typically what electronics run on inside. Alternating current (AC) changes direction many times per second, like the current in the wall outlet. Therefore, many devices convert alternating current from the wall to the direct current the circuit needs through a power supply.
§Analog and digital signals
A signal can be analogue or digital. An analogue signal slides smoothly up and down and can have all intermediate values — like a sound wave. A digital signal on the other hand only knows two states often called 0 and 1 high and low. Digital signals are less sensitive to noise and easy to process with logic and therefore most modern electronics is digital inside even though the world outside (sound light temperature) is analogue.

On a circuit board, you meet the same building blocks again and again. Knowing their role is the key to reading a circuit.

§Circuits and diagrams
A circuit is a closed path current can flow through. It is drawn as a diagram with standard symbols for each component. Being able to read a diagram — follow where the signal comes from what happens to it and where it ends — is one of the most important skills in the trade. A diagram is the circuit's map.
§Why the basics underpin everything
Regardless of how advanced the equipment becomes, it cannot replace the judgement that comes from reading a stone, seeing its veins and understanding how best to treat it. Digital technology is a powerful tool for precision, documentation and efficiency — but the heart of the trade is still the craftsman's understanding of the material.
