How you work safely with electricity and sensitive components — and deliver circuits that hold
Safety in electronics has two sides: protecting yourself from electricity, heat and chemicals and protecting sensitive components from damage. Both require discipline and good habits. Here is the most important.
§Current can be dangerous — also 'low voltage'
The word 'roofing felt' comes from when paper was impregnated with coal tar. Today the material is something completely different: a bitumen membrane — a byproduct of oil refining — that is reinforced with reinforcement and added polymers that improve its properties. If you are to work professionally with the material, you must know the two major polymer families: SBS and APP.
§Protect against static electricity (ESD)
Static electricity (ESD) is one of the biggest invisible threats to components. A small shock you barely feel can damage or weaken an integrated circuit. Use a grounded wrist strap, antistatic mat, and antistatic packaging when handling sensitive components, and avoid touching leads and contact surfaces unnecessarily. The damage may only appear later as an unexplained error – therefore you prevent rather than troubleshoot.
§Soldering, heat and chemistry
The soldering iron is very hot and can cause burns and start fires — always put it back in the stand and turn it off after use. Soldering fumes should not be inhaled; work with extraction or good ventilation. Some cleaning and flux products are harmful to health; know their hazard labels, wear gloves and eye protection where necessary, and store them safely. The fine scale in electronics makes it easy to forget that heat and chemicals can still damage.
§What you may and may not do
Work on fixed electrical installations and on equipment connected to mains voltage may be regulated and may require certain qualifications or authorization. Know the limits for what you may work with at your level, and ask or call the right professional if a task is beyond that. Knowing your limit is a professional strength, not a weakness.
§Quality — the small error that tips everything
In electronics, a single cold solder joint, a component placed the wrong way round, or a short circuit can make an entire circuit unusable — and the error is often invisible. That is why quality assurance is crucial: check the solder work visually, measure connections afterwards, check that components are oriented correctly, and test the circuit step by step rather than turning everything on at once and hoping. Systematic work catches the errors that would otherwise cost hours.
§Waste and environment
Electronics contain substances that must not go in regular waste. Discarded components, circuits and batteries must be handed over as electronic waste, and among other things lead and batteries require special handling. Getting rid of waste properly is part of responsible craftsmanship.
