Current, solder fumes, static electricity and the cramped work over the bench: how to take care of yourself in a whole working life
An electronics workshop sounds peaceful — no loud machinery, no construction dust. But precisely because the trade looks innocent, it's important to take the working environment seriously. Most injuries in the trade are not dramatic accidents, but something that builds up over time: poor eyesight, an aching neck, exposure to something you barely noticed.
§Current — respect rather than fear
You work mostly with low voltages, but there are still situations where electricity can be dangerous — especially when testing equipment that is connected to the mains or components that hold a charge. The basic rule is simple: if you don't know if something is de-energised, treat it as if it isn't. Switch off, check and use your measuring instruments to confirm before you touch.
§Soldering — fumes, heat and eyes
Soldering is at the heart of the craft, but soldering fumes need to be away from your breathing. Use point extraction at the bench, and do not inhale the flux smoke. The soldering iron is glowing, and drops of tin can splash — so eye protection and a tidy bench are not pedantry, but common sense. Wash your hands after working with solder, especially before eating.

Static electricity is primarily a threat to sensitive components, but ESD discipline is also part of good order on a bench. Grounding straps, ESD mats, and proper storage bags belong to the trade. When you make it a habit, you spare both expensive equipment and your reputation as a careful professional.
§Ergonomics — the body you need for life.
Electronics work takes place close to small things and tempts you to bend over the bench for hours. That is where many get pain — in neck, shoulders and back. A good work height, a chair that supports and getting up and stretching at regular intervals makes a huge difference over a working life. Your body must last forty years not just until lunch.

The most important work environment tool is the routine you build as an apprentice. The person who turns on the ventilation from the start straightens their back and stops before control does it automatically for the rest of their career.
