Chlorine pH and control routines: how to keep a swimming pool safe to swim in
Being able to perform minor repairs in swimming pools, perform routine tasks in a safety and health-responsible manner, and conduct statutory water tests is one of the goals in the education. Swimming pools are one of the areas where technology and hygiene are most closely linked, because poor water quality directly affects the health of swimmers.
§The rules behind pool water
Publicly accessible swimming pools in Denmark are regulated by regulation on swimming pool facilities etc. and their water quality (regulation no. 918 of June 27, 2016). The regulation sets requirements for how basin water must be cleaned, disinfected, and monitored so it's safe to swim in.
§Chlorine and pH — the central measurements
Chlorine keeps water free from bacteria and other microorganisms while pH determines how well chlorine works and how gentle the water is for skin and eyes. In low chlorination — the most common operating mode — the content of free chlorine in pool water must be at least 0.4 and at most 0.8 mg per liter. Both disinfection and pH adjustment must be automatically controlled so the values stay stable throughout the day regardless of how many swimmers have been in the water.
§Control routines you perform
Although the system controls chlorine and pH automatically the pool water quality must be manually checked before each opening so you can see that the automatic measuring equipment really does regulate free and bound chlorine pH and temperature correctly. Furthermore the automatic measuring equipment must be read at most six hours apart while the pool is in use. This makes the water sample a fixed recurring part of the day — not something you do when you remember it.

§Hygiene and infection risk
Beyond water quality itself you must know about hygiene and infection prevention in cleaning and maintaining changing rooms showers and other facilities in the swimming pool and be able to guide swimmers on personal hygiene and safety when moving in wet areas. Slippery floors in wet areas are a frequent cause of falls so marking and ongoing cleaning are just as important as the water test.
§Work environment in the swimming pool
Work in and around pools has its own ergonomics and risks: wet floors, chemical vapors and lifting of heavy technical equipment. Correct working technique and working posture using relevant machinery, along with good ventilation of the technical room, are part of safe pool operation.
