Safety, rules and quality in retail

From consumer rights to safe workplace

Retail trade is regulated to protect both the customer and the store. As an employee you need to know the most important rules so you can advise correctly and act right when something goes wrong.

§Consumer rights

Consumers have a statutory right of complaint if goods are defective. Many shops also offer a voluntary return right. It is important to know the difference and to advise the customer honestly so expectations are clear from the start.

§Prices and marketing

Prices must be clear and correct, and offers must be real. Misleading marketing is not allowed. When working with campaigns and signage, it is your responsibility that what the customer sees holds true.

  • 01Know the difference between complaint rights and voluntary return rights.
  • 02Ensure clear and correct prices.
  • 03Keep offers real — avoid misleading.
  • 04Treat personal information responsibly.

§Safety at work

A shop has its own safety conditions: heavy lifting, movement in storage, use of ladders and handling of robbery or theft situations. You learn to lift properly, keep walkways clear and follow the shop's guidelines in uncomfortable situations.

§Waste

Shrinkage covers goods that disappear through theft, error or waste. It goes directly against the store's earnings. A watchful employee, good routines and correct registration are the best protection against shrinkage.
