Retail manager and shop management

The specialty for you who want responsibility for more than your own sales

Among the retail trade education's specialties, there is one that sets itself apart from the others: retail manager. Where sales assistant, digital commerce and convenience are about becoming good at selling and running the business, retail manager is about taking responsibility up one level — planning, delegating and making others succeed. This is the specialty for you who already enjoy shop work but dream of more responsibility, more decisions and a career as a manager.

§A superstructure not a shortcut

Retail manager is what you call a level 2 specialism. This means you don't start directly on it — you build it on top of one of the other specializations: sales assistant, convenience or digital commerce. This is evident from the executive order on the retail trade education with specializations, where retail manager is described as an extension of the main course from the usual about two years to around three years. The extra months are used to go deeper into management, planning and shop economics, while you are still in a real shop.

§What does a store manager do?

A manager's day looks different from a regular employee's. You still sell and help on the floor during busy times but much of your time goes to tasks about getting the whole store to function as a whole.

  • 02Follow the shop's key figures — turnover, margin, and shrinkage
  • 03Order goods and manage assortment together with the chain or purchasing
  • 04Train new employees and students
  • 05Provide feedback and hold employee conversations
  • 06Set sales and service targets and follow up on them

§From professionally skilled to managing others

It is not automatic that the best salesman becomes the best manager — it requires different skills. As a manager, you must be able to delegate instead of doing everything yourself, give constructive feedback without compromising on tone, and make decisions even when not everyone agrees. The specialty gives you the tools for this: you learn about planning, communication and the numbers a store lives on, so you can make decisions on an informed basis rather than gut feeling alone.

§School part of the specialty

The retail manager course itself adds an extra year on top of the specialty you come from. According to the Retail Qualifications' own description of the specialty the school teaching — including the final examination — typically lies around 7-11 weeks distributed over at least two school periods. The rest of the extra year happens in practice where you gradually get more responsibility entrusted by your immediate manager so you actually test the management role while still having a safety net.

StepWhat it gives you
Sales assistant, convenience or digital commerceThe foundation: sales, service, product knowledge and operations
Retail manager (additional approx. 1 year)Leadership, planning, personnel and retail economics
After the journeyman certificateQualified for sous chef and store manager roles

§The way forward after the journeyman certificate

With retail manager in your background you stand stronger in applications for sous-chef or assistant store manager positions and many chains prefer exactly a candidate with both the professional retail background and a documented management specialism. From here the path often leads towards store manager district manager or — if you prefer to run your own business — a future as self-employed or franchisor. Combined with further education in management or retail economics there is no natural limit to how far you can go.

A good playground should challenge the body and courage – but never challenge safety.
