Rules, driving licence and certificates in the subject
What the legislation requires before you can service and test drive
As a bicycle, moped and motorcycle mechanic you work with vehicles that must be safe to use in traffic. Therefore the trade is bound up with a series of rules and requirements that you encounter already during your apprenticeship.
§Certificates you must have during the education
Before you can move on from the basic course, you must have obtained a number of mandatory certificates and skills. They are about being able to work safely with the materials and processes the trade includes.
- 01Personal safety when working with epoxy and isocyanates
- 02Work environment and safety during welding and thermal cutting
- 03First aid in vocational education, incl. traffic-related first aid
- 04Basic fire fighting.
§Driving license before journeyman exam
Before you go to the final exam, you must have acquired the relevant driving licence according to current rules — you need to be able to test drive the vehicles you repair. Only in special cases can the trade committee specifically exempt you from the requirement.
§The law on the vehicle
When you adjust brakes lights gear and engine you're not just doing it for the customer — you're making the vehicle legal. Brakes lighting and light systems and for mopeds also structural aspects like top speed are covered by traffic legislation and equipment requirements. An incorrectly set moped can make it illegal so you must know the rules for what you work on.
- 01Brakes and brake systems must meet safety requirements
- 02Light and reflective equipment must be legal and functional
- 03Mopeds may not be modified to drive faster than allowed
- 04Purchase and complaint follow the Purchase Act — you must be able to guide the customer correctly
§The regulation is the profession's constitution
The education itself is set out in a regulation on vocational training for cycle and motorcycle mechanics issued on the decision of the professional committee Metalindustriens Uddannelsesudvalg. It describes aims duration tests and the requirements that apply — and it is updated regularly so the trade and requirements keep up with industry development.
You don't need to know the regulation by heart, but it's good to know it exists: it's the guarantee that your journeyman certificate means the same thing, regardless of which school you attended.
