Wheel building and truing: how a wheel becomes round

Spoke tension, truing and why new wheels should be re-tensioned.

One of the competency objectives for the education is to build and select bicycle wheels with different tensioning patterns and centering and to be able to check troubleshoot and repair them. Wheel building is one of the disciplines where patience and system matter more than raw power.

§Spoke wrench is used only for motorcycle wheels.

A bicycle wheel is kept round and straight by spokes running from hub to rim pulling towards each other in a finely tuned balance point. With a spoke wrench you can adjust the tension on individual spokes — tighten one spoke and the rim is pulled slightly to that side; loosen another and you give way. Truing is about systematically spinning the wheel finding the largest sideways and roundness deviations and gradually adjusting until the wheel runs evenly all the way around.

§Uniform wood tension is the key

A well-built wheel has not only true roundness—it also has uniform spoke tension all the way around. Uneven spoke tension is one of the most common reasons a wheel begins to run out of true again shortly after truing, that it 'pings' or creaks under load, or that individual spokes or nipples fail prematurely. Too-low tension makes the entire wheel soft and unstable under load; too-high tension can in the worst case break a spoke or over time cause the rim to crack at the nipple holes.

§New wheels must be re-tightened

A newly built wheel has a running-in period. When the wheel is loaded for the first time the spokes settle into the hub's holes and the nipples settle in the rim which typically causes the overall tension to drop noticeably at first. That is why industry practice recommends a post-check and re-tensioning after the wheel has driven the first kilometres — without that check the customer risks getting a wheel that slowly runs out of true again even though it left the workshop perfect.

§From bicycle to motorcycle

The learning outcomes for the last part of the main course explicitly state that you must also be able to measure, inspect and repair wheels on single-cylinder vehicles, including replacing spokes and truing wheels. The principle is the same as on a bicycle, just on a larger scale and with more robust components — the understanding of spoke tension and balance is transferred directly from the bicycle wheel to the motorcycle wheel.

A wheel running straight is not luck. It is system patience and an understanding that all the spokes work together.
