The journeyman's exam as a boat mechanic: how the final exam runs
From basic course through main course to the decisive practical exam
The education to boat mechanic is a vocational education (EUD) that alternates between school and training in a business, and it is completed with a journeyman exam, which must demonstrate that you can do what the trade requires. Knowing the structure and the exam makes it easier to plan your way there.
§The basic course
The path begins with a basic course. If you come directly from secondary school you typically start with basic course part 1 while others can go directly to basic course part 2 which lasts about 20 weeks and gives you a professional basis within the technical main area. To be admitted to basic course part 2 you must as a general rule have an apprenticeship agreement with a company in place.
§The main course: school and practical work
After the basic course the main course begins, where you alternate between school stays and practical training with a master. The first level leads to the title of equipment mechanic, which is the broad basic training in the trade: engine, hydraulics, transmission, electricity, and the basic workshop crafts you meet regardless of which type of machine you later specialize in. The main course at level 1 lasts approximately a year and a half, of which classroom instruction makes up a smaller part distributed over several school periods — the rest is practical work in a company.
§The journeyman's exam
The main course concludes with the journeyman's exam — the decisive practical and often theoretical test of whether you master the trade at journeyman level. The exam is typically graded by the local training board or designated master craftspeople from the industry, who assess both the craftsmanship result and your professional explanation of what you have done and why.

§EUX: trade and upper secondary exam at the same time
Boat mechanic training can also be taken as EUX, where you combine the vocational certificate with a secondary-level qualification that gives access to higher education. It's an advantage if you're considering building on the trade long-term with, for example, mechanical engineering or engineering training.
