Boat mechanic

As a boat mechanic you keep both boats and engines going. You service, repair and prepare leisure and working boats — from the engine and electrical system to hull and equipment. You become a versatile mechanic who understands both technology and the maritime environment where saltwater and wear place special demands on good repair.

You work at a boatyard or marine workshop, often close to the harbour. A day can be spent servicing a boat engine, troubleshooting the electrical system, repairing a hull or preparing boats for the season. You work with many different types of boats and engines, and you must be able to find your way with mechanics, electricity and a bit of everything.

• 02You learn troubleshooting on maritime electrical and control systems.
• 03You learn to repair hulls in fiberglass, wood, and other materials.
• 04You learn about propulsion, propellers, and drivetrains.
• 05You learn preparation, winter storage, and launching.
• 06You learn to work safely with motors, chemicals, and lifting.

You take a basic course at a vocational school and then find an apprenticeship at a shipyard or marine workshop. You alternate between school and practice and get apprentice wages along the way. The trade suits you if you're passionate about engines and have an interest in water and boats.

As fully trained you can work at shipyards marine workshops or motor dealers. You can specialise in for example large diesel engines or electric propulsion systems and build further towards related mechanic and maritime trades.
