Further and continuing education for boat mechanics

What you can build on your journeyman certificate

When you stand with your journeyman's certificate as a boat mechanic you have a solid technical foundation. But the trade doesn't stand still nor do you need to yourself. There are many paths to improve specialize or change course — from short courses to entire higher educations.

§Short courses and specialist certificates

The quickest path to new knowledge is short further education courses. Many are offered as AMU courses or by the motor manufacturers themselves. They keep you updated on new technology and provide you with the documentation specific tasks require.

  • 01Brand-specific courses from motor and boat manufacturers
  • 02Courses in high-voltage and battery technology for electric propulsion
  • 03Refrigerant and climate system certificates
  • 04Welding and materials courses
  • 05Truck crane and lifting certificates for shipyard work

§Towards further education

If you want to go further up in the theoretical, a skilled background can be a springboard to higher education. If you have taken an EUX or supplement with academic subjects, more doors open. Typical directions for a skilled technical worker are for example:

DirectionLevelWhat it gives you
AMU and trade coursesContinuing educationUpdate and specialist certificates
Business academy education (e.g. technician/technologist).Short further educationBroader technical and commercial knowledge
Installer (electrical or plumbing)Short further educationRight to design and perform authorized work
Diploma/Professional Bachelor (Engineering)Medium-length higher educationWeigh towards engineering and management roles

§Leadership paths and independence

Experience can also lead upwards without a new long education. Many experienced boat mechanics become workshop foreman, service manager or start their own business. If you want that path, courses in management, quality control and business operations are a good investment alongside the technical.

§Related fields to switch to

Your skills in mechanics, electrics and mechanics are applicable in several related trades — for example as a mechanic in other industries, within the maritime sector or in manufacturing. Qualified tradespeople with a broad technical profile rarely have only one door to enter.

The journeyman's certificate is as much a launching pad as a finish line — most technical skills you can build on.
