Driveline in depth: gearbox, shaft, propeller and corrosion protection

The link that converts force to propulsion — and which corrodes if you don't take care of it

The driveline is the link that converts the engine's power to propulsion in the water, and it contains some of the most specialised — and most corrosion-exposed — parts on the entire boat. Understanding gearbox, shaft, propeller and corrosion protection in depth is what separates the experienced boat mechanic from the beginner.

§Gearbox and shaft

The gearbox sits between the engine and shaft and makes it possible to couple power forward, reverse and freewheel as well as reduce the engine's revolutions to a level the propeller works efficiently at. The shaft carries the power through the hull to the propeller and is supported by bearings and sealed with a packing or box that prevents water from entering while allowing the shaft to rotate freely.

§Propeller: pitch, diameter, and damage

The propeller's diameter and pitch are matched to the motor, hull, and boat's use, and an incorrect propeller can result in too low or too high engine speed, poor acceleration, or unnecessary fuel consumption. In day-to-day work, you inspect the propeller for dents, cracks, and bent blades — often caused by grounding or collisions with foreign objects — as well as fouling that reduces efficiency.

§Galvanic corrosion and sacrificial anodes

When two different metals are electrically connected and both are in water, a galvanic cell develops where the less noble metal corrodes away to protect the more noble. On a boat this is exploited deliberately: a sacrificial anode of zinc (in salt water) or aluminum/magnesium (in brackish and fresh water) is mounted and electrically connected to the shaft, drive, rudder, or other submerged metal parts so it's the anode—not the shaft or drive—that corrodes away. An anode functioning normally typically lasts at least a season, and a rapidly deteriorated anode is a sign that there's an electrical fault somewhere in the system that should be investigated.

§Trim and Z-drive

On boats with stern drive (Z-drive) or outboard motor, you can trim the drive so the engine's angle relative to the water changes — this affects the boat's plane, speed, and fuel consumption. The trim system is hydraulic or electric and must be kept tight and free of air, just as the entire drive must be inspected for leaks of gear oil, which is an early sign of worn seals.
