How to take care of yourself, your colleagues, and the system

The craft is filled with energy in the literal sense: electrical voltage, machines that move, pressure in hydraulics and pneumatics, and systems that can start unexpectedly. Most injuries don't happen because someone didn't know better, but because a routine task was performed without the last safety steps. That's why safety is something you do every time — not just when it's dangerous.

§Work without tension where you can

The basic rule is to make the system de-energised before you work on it. This is about disconnecting, securing against reconnection, checking that the voltage is actually gone, and only then starting. If you have to exceptionally work close to live parts, it requires special instruction, the right tools and often an extra person to keep an eye on things.

§Protection against accidental start

A system that suddenly starts while you have your hands in it is one of the most serious dangers in the trade. That is why you learn to secure machines in a safe state before entering the danger area — e.g. by disconnecting and physically locking so no one else can start the system while you work. This also applies to pressure: a pneumatic or hydraulic system can have stored energy even if the power is turned off.

§Robots and collaboration with machines

Modern facilities often have robots and automatic movements that are faster and stronger than you can react to. You must know safety zones, light barriers and emergency stop, and you must understand that a robot standing still is not necessarily turned off. Before you enter a cell, it must be in a safe state according to the fixed procedure – not by a guess.

§Ergonomics and the long run.

Many of the trade's strains show up only after years: knees from working low, back from heavy lifting, and hearing from noisy halls. Use aids for heavy lifting, change working position, and consistently wear hearing protection where there is noise. It feels superfluous when you're young — and that's precisely why injuries strike those who skipped it.

The safest technician is not the one who is never scared. It's the one who has done the safe grip so many times that it happens automatically — even when in a hurry.
