Digital craftsmanship: leveling drawing and quantity calculation
From laser levels to digital measurement book and drawing program
There are still hands muscles and eye judgment in the structural steel trade but today they are supplemented by digital equipment that makes the work more precise and easier to document. Being able to operate the digital equipment correctly has become just as important as being able to hold a level.
§Levelling and setting today
The education requires that you can level surfaces, set heights, and mark horizontal and vertical lines, and that you can choose the right measuring instrument for the task. Where this previously happened with string and manual leveling instruments, rotating lasers, digital level transits, and increasingly GPS or GNSS-guided equipment are used today, which can guide both handheld measurement and machine guidance on the excavator. Regardless of the equipment, you must be able to verify instrument accuracy through simple practical verification so you are sure that the set angles and heights are correct.
§Digital drawing programs and sketches
Another part of digital craft is drawing. You must be able to produce drawings in digital drawing programs for use in executing and documenting a practical work task, but at the same time you must be able to draw freehand and make sketches when a detail on site needs to be solved right now. The two skills complement each other: the digital drawing program provides precision and a document that can be saved and shared, while freehand sketching is fastest when the problem needs to be solved immediately.
§Quantity calculation without waste
With respect to sustainable construction you must be able to make piece and quantity calculations of materials for common work tasks including using relevant digital tools. It is about ordering the right amount of gravel concrete or paving stones—neither too little so the work stalls nor too much so there is surplus that must be disposed of. The competency goals for both concrete work and paving work explicitly mention that it must be carried out with minimal material waste.

§Quality control: three types of inspection
All digital documentation is collected in a quality control system based on three inspections: receiving inspection, where you check delivered materials before they are used; process inspection, where you continuously inspect the work as it is being performed; and final inspection, where the finished work is reviewed. The purpose is to identify the most common construction defects in the specialty before they become expensive or hidden underground or under the covering.

§Digital collaboration across trades
The digital drawings and measurements you make also become part of a larger collaboration with other trades on the site. Electricians, carpenters and engineers often work from the same digital basis, and accurate, up-to-date setting-out or correctly drawn detail measurements save everyone guessing and corrections later. This requires you to be disciplined about keeping your documentation up to date and sharing it, rather than keeping it on a personal camera or a note in your pocket — because in the end it is the shared documentation that the entire building process can rely on.
The development also goes toward more of the competencies you use daily—from sales to quantity calculation—increasingly expected to be performed digitally already from the basic course. The earlier you become comfortable with digital tools the more time you have to spend on the actual craft when you come into training.
