Studiemateriale
This study guide is not about the technical engineering of technical insulation — you find that in the trade's articles calculators and templates. Instead we look at the actual training path: how the technical insulation AMU courses are structured what they cost which certificate you get how you register and how you can potentially build towards a full vocational education as a technical insulator. The information is based on AMU SYD's own pages and official sources. Always check current figures and dates on the sources before you register.
§What is an AMU course?
AMU stands for labor market education. These are short, practice-oriented courses intended for adults who are already working or entering a trade. Within technical insulation, you can take individual courses that each give you a concrete skill – from basic insulation to plate unfolding, refrigeration insulation, and fire insulation. You do not need to take them all, and you can combine them as needed.
§The courses in technical insulation at AMU SYD
AMU SYD offers a range of independent courses in technical insulation. The duration ranges from a single day to two weeks per course. Below are the courses with their duration in days as specified on the school's website (always check the latest start date and duration on the course's own page, as classes change continuously).
| Course | Duration |
|---|---|
| Technical insulation of surfaces and tanks | 1 dag |
| Calculation of insulation thicknesses | 2 days |
| Cooler insulation - Foamglas | 3 days |
| Technical pipe and channel insulation, cardboard and canvas | 3 days |
| Koeleisolering/cellegummislanger | 4 days |
| Technical insulation - PVC film step 1 | 4 days |
| Technical insulation - PVC film step 2 | 4 days |
| Koeleisolering/cellegummiplader | 5 days |
| Plate insulation in offshore and oil industry | 5 days |
| Technical fire insulation - ventilation and fire damping | 5 days |
| Technical insulation - thermal systems | 5 days |
| Basic technical insulation | 10 dage |
| Plate unfolding - step 1 | 10 dage |
| Plate unfolding - step 2 | 10 dage |
| Plate unfolding - step 3 | 10 dage |
The plate unfolding courses are built up in three stages so you can take them in order and gradually work your way up in difficulty. If you are new to the field, Basic Technical Insulation is a natural starting point.
§Proof — not exam
On an AMU course, there is normally no exam. Instead, the training institution issues an AMU certificate to participants who, in the instructor's assessment, have reached the course's goals. The certificate documents your competency to employers. Some courses are certificate courses, where you get an actual certificate — here there may be special admission requirements you must meet first.
§What does it cost? Adult Vocational Training economics
There is participant payment on most AMU courses but the price depends on your educational background. If you are unskilled or skilled you pay a lower course fee and can apply for VEU compensation. If you have a higher education you pay full price as a basis (unless that higher education has not been used for the past 5 years).
- 01The participant fee for unskilled and skilled workers is up to approximately 1,040 kr. per week — as an example, the 5-day course Technical insulation - thermal systems costs 1,070 kr. for this group and 4,278.25 kr. for unemployed or participants with higher education. Always see the specific price on the course's own page.
- 02VET allowance corresponds to the unemployment benefit rate and is paid for the hours you participate. In 2026, the rate is 137.47 kr. per hour, equivalent to 5,086.39 kr. per week at full time (37 hours).
- 03You can apply for travel allowance and possibly allowances for food and lodging in addition to the training grant.
- 04VET allowance requires, among other things, that you are employed, lose wages during course time and have at most a vocational education as your highest education. There is a ceiling of 10 weeks (370 hours) per calendar year.
§How to register
Registration for AMU courses is via voksenuddannelse.dk, which is the shared digital entry to public adult and further education (it has replaced efteruddannelse.dk). You log in with MitID/NemLog-in, register for the course and apply for VEU compensation and travel allowance in the same process. If your employer registers you, the employee must have the right permissions in NemLog-in. You can also contact AMU SYD's course secretariat directly for help at phone 76 37 37 44.
§Good study tips
- 01Start with Basic Technical Insulation if you are new – it provides a foundation that the other courses build on.
- 02Arrange with your employer how wages and VEU compensation are handled before the course starts, so there is no doubt about the finances.
- 03Bring work clothes and safety footwear — insulation courses are practical, and you work with materials and tools from day one.
- 04Use the trade's calculators on Discebo to repeat e.g. insulation thicknesses so you meet prepared for the courses that require calculation.
- 05Collect your AMU credentials — several courses together document a broad profile and can count if you later want to take the full vocational qualification.
§Then you can build further: technical insulation technician (EUD/EUV)
If you want to have a full journeyman certificate, you can take the vocational education in technical insulation. It alternates between school stays and training at an insulation company and you earn wages during the course as long as you have a valid education agreement. The education consists of a basic course followed by 5 main courses with school stays (6 weeks per main course at AMU SYD). If you are under 25, you take basic course 1 + basic course 2; if you are over 25, you can take an EUV starting at basic course 2 (20 weeks). The last main course concludes with an exam and practical test — the journeyman exam. Admission is via optagelse.dk.
