Isocyanate training structure: basic training, supervision and refresher
Who should be trained, how long does it take, and when should it be renewed
The requirement for training to work with isocyanates is not just 'a course you take once'. The rules distinguish between who needs to be trained, how extensive the training should be, and how often it should be renewed — and they have been tightened several times in recent years.
§Basic training: 2 days for anyone who works with or supervises
The basic education is a 2-day course aimed at anyone working with or supervising isocyanate-containing products. The course covers health hazards, how the work is planned, and how protective equipment and ventilation are used correctly, and concludes with a certificate of education that must be presented as documentation.
§Inspector is covered equally with performer
From August 2023 the requirement has been tightened so it is no longer just those who themselves handle the products who must be trained: also the person who supervises isocyanate work must have completed special training. The background is that a supervisor who does not themselves know the hazards and correct working methods in detail cannot detect and correct errors before they have consequences.
§Supplementary Course with Increased Exposure Risk
There is also a supplementary 1-day course for people who work with isocyanates in situations with increased risk of exposure — for example tasks with more intense spraying or warmer processes where more vapour or aerosol can form. The requirement for the supplementary course came in from August 2023 together with the tightening for supervisors.
§Refresher every 5 years
The education is not something you take once and for all. People covered by the isocyanate training requirement must refresh it every 5 years. How the actual refresher course should be structured is not yet finally settled in all details but the requirement that it must happen already applies. For those who had already completed their education when the new rules took effect the rule is that the first renewal must in any case happen in 2028 — regardless of how old the original education is.
§Why the requirements have been tightened gradually
The tightenings are because isocyanates are among the substances most likely to lead to work-related asthma and allergies, and the consequences can be permanent. By expanding the requirement to also include supervisory staff and introducing a fixed refresher cycle, the rules ensure that knowledge of the dangers and safe working methods does not gradually disappear while you are in the profession.
