Storage of hazardous goods in warehouse

Some goods pose a particular risk: they can be flammable, corrosive, toxic or otherwise dangerous. When such cargo is stored in a warehouse, stricter requirements apply to labelling, storage and handling because an error can have serious consequences for people, buildings and the environment.

Dangerous goods are marked with hazard labels/symbols showing what type of hazard is involved — for example flammable, corrosive or toxic. Chemicals also have a safety data sheet that describes hazards, safe handling, storage and first aid. Always read the label and data sheet before handling the goods.

• 02Keep incompatible substances separate so they cannot react together.
• 03Ensure ventilation and spill collection where required.
• 04Keep flammable goods away from ignition sources.
• 05Follow the company's and authorities' rules for quantities and placement.

Use the prescribed personal protective equipment for the substance — for example gloves, safety glasses or respiratory protection. Avoid spillage, and when spillage occurs, follow a fixed containment and cleanup procedure. Make sure you know where eyewash stations, fire extinguishers and spill kits are located.

A warehouse with hazardous goods must have emergency preparedness: known escape routes fire fighting first aid and a plan for what to do in case of accident and spill. As an employee you must know your role in the emergency plan and know who to alert.

Respect for labelling, correct separation and use of PPE is the core of safe storage of hazardous materials. When the rules are followed, you protect yourself, your colleagues and the environment.
