The history of logistics — and why warehouse work became courses

From military supply lines to modern supply chains and vocational education

Logistics sounds modern, but the discipline itself is ancient. Right from the great armies of antiquity, the key question has been: how do you get the right thing to the right place at the right time? That is still the core of logistics today — and it is the task that lies behind every AMU course in warehouse and logistics.

§The word comes from the army

The very word 'logistics' comes from the military where it meant the art of supplying armies with food weapons and equipment. An army without supplies loses regardless of how skilled it is — therefore supply lines storage and transport became a science in itself. Many of logistics' breakthroughs have also happened during wars where the need to move enormous amounts of goods quickly was a matter of victory or defeat.

§From manual power to assistance

In old warehouses and storehouses, handling was purely physical work: carrying, rolling, stacking and hoisting with pulleys. A warehouse was measured in how many strong arms you had. The breakthrough came with two inventions in the early 1900s — the motorised forklift and the pallet — which during and after World War II made it possible to assemble goods into unit loads and move tons in seconds. With them, the warehouse could be built upwards and the work became faster and less wearing.

Standardization followed: uniform pallet dimensions (such as the EUR pallet from the beginning of the 1960s) meant that trucks, racks, and lorries fit together. And the container, which broke through from 1956, created the terminal and the idea of moving goods without storing it (cross-docking). Logistics became a coherent chain – a supply chain – from factory through warehouse and transport to customer.

§Safety and rules grow

With the powerful machines and heavy loads came the accidents — and thus the rules. It became a requirement to have a certificate to operate most trucks shelves had to be dimensioned marked with load and inspected and lifting technique and ergonomics became part of the working environment because wear and tear was a big problem. For dangerous goods an international set of rules emerged: the ADR convention for road transport with its nine hazard classes hazard labels UN numbers and safety data sheets. The rules did not come by themselves — they are the result of learning from accidents and deciding to prevent them.

§Why are storage courses taught as AMU courses

Because the trade has changed so rapidly — from manual labor to truck, from ledger to scanner, from loose habits to certificates and ADR — you cannot learn it once and for all. Workforce development programs (AMU) arose precisely to give adults already at work short, targeted courses that keep up with development. Instead of a long basic education, you take the modules the job requires: truck certificate, dangerous goods, warehouse management with IT, ergonomics. It fits a trade where technology and regulations change constantly.

When you take a warehouse and logistics course today you step into a discipline spanning from ancient supply lines to today's automatic warehouses. Knowing the history makes clear why accuracy standardization safety and ability to learn new things are the core of good logistics work.
