Pallets, pallets and load securing in warehouse work
A unit load is several pieces combined into one manageable unit — typically goods stacked and secured on a pallet. By collecting goods in unit loads you can handle much more efficiently with truck and pallet jack and goods are better protected during handling and transport.
A good load is stable and durable. Place the heavy and strong packages at the bottom and lighter ones on top. Connect the layers so they hold together and do not let packages stick out over the pallet edge where they are easily damaged. A crooked or top-heavy load can tip over during transport or truck handling.
When the load is built, it's secured so it doesn't shift. Shrink film, stretch film, straps, or netting hold the unit load together. On the truck, the cargo is further secured so it doesn't move during driving, braking, or turning. The aim is both to protect the goods and to avoid dangerous situations.
Unit loads are handled with trucks, pallet lifters and other aids. It requires instruction and — for most truck types — a certificate to operate them. Operate within the pallet's and truck's capacity keep forks low while driving and maintain line of sight and distance to people.
