The crane operator's training path: from crane basis to certificate
The AMU program that builds skills step by step
The path to a crane operator certificate goes through the AMU system, where the courses are structured as a ladder. You cannot buy your way to the heaviest certificate directly — each step requires that the previous one has been passed, because the competencies build on each other.
§Crane basis: the foundation
Crane basis is the entry to the trade. Here you learn to operate bridge and gantry cranes and to operate cranes with a lifting capacity above 8 tonne/tonmetre, and you gain the basic understanding of load assessment, rigging and safety that is repeated in all subsequent crane courses. The course typically takes place in a dedicated crane hall with practical exercise combined with theory.
§Mobile cranes 8-30 tonsmetre
The next step is mobile cranes from 8 to and including 30 ton-metres where crane base is often integrated as part of the course if you don't already have it. Here is added what is special about the mobile crane: deployment on support legs, assessment of ground conditions, load diagram at different boom extensions and boom angles and the stability challenges a fixed crane doesn't have.
§Mobile cranes over 30 tonsmetre
The heaviest mobile crane certificate can only be obtained when the certificate for mobile cranes 8-30 ton-meter has been obtained. Here you work with larger and more complex mobile cranes often with telescoping booms multiple outrigger configurations and more advanced load diagrams where the connection between reach boom angle and support becomes even more crucial.
§Tower crane and permanently installed cranes
The track for tower cranes and other permanently installed cranes over 8 tonne-metres runs separately from the mobile crane track, because the crane form and risk picture are different – here assembly, dismantling, and flag weather weigh more than stability on support legs.

§Practical exam and theory
Each course concludes with an exam that tests both theory — regulations, load assessment, safety — and practical crane operation, where you demonstrate that you can plan and execute a lift responsibly from start to finish, including daily inspection and correct reading of the load chart.
§After check-in
The certificate is not the end point. Crane forms develop — new electronic systems new crane types changed rules — and an experienced crane operator keeps up both through practical experience at different sites and through the instruction you receive in the specific crane each time you encounter a new setup.
