Overload protection, load indicator and anti-collision
The modern crane is far more than motor, cable and boom. It is also surrounded by electronics that continuously measure, calculate and warn — and which in many cases can intervene before a limit is exceeded. The systems don't make lifting automatically safe, but they remove some of the uncertainty earlier generations of crane operators had to handle alone with eye and experience.
§Overload protection (load moment limiter)
The overload protection — often called a load moment limiter — continuously measures the load weight and crane outreach and calculates the current load moment. As the load approaches the limit, the system warns the operator, and if the limit is exceeded, the system can stop the movement that would increase the load further — for example boom extension or further hoisting. For mobile cranes, according to the European standard for mobile cranes (EN 13000), overload protection is required when the crane's capacity exceeds 1,000 kg or the load moment exceeds 40,000 Nm — which in practice covers virtually all mobile cranes except the very smallest.
§Digital load indicator and load diagram in the cabin
In many cabs, a display shows in real time how much is currently being lifted, how large the outreach is, and how much of the crane's capacity is in use in that configuration. Some systems also show the entire load diagram graphically, so the operator can see how close you are to the limit before the outreach changes — instead of looking up a paper table in the middle of a lift.
§Anti-collision systems between multiple cranes
On large construction sites with multiple tower cranes close together, the biggest new risk is not the lift itself but two cranes' arms or loads colliding when they swing. Anti-collision systems monitor the cranes' mutual positions and warn or brake the movement if two cranes get too close. It supplements — but does not replace — the basic planning of which cranes are allowed to swing into each other's areas and when.
§Data logger: the crane's black box
Many modern cranes record and store data about lifts — load boom length time and any warnings — in a data logger. In an incident or disagreement about what happened during a lift this documentation can be crucial for understanding the sequence afterwards the same way an aircraft data recorder is used in aviation.
§The technology's limits
Electronics is a layer of safety on top of — not instead of — the crane operator's own judgment and basic procedures. Sensors can give false readings, must be calibrated and can in rare cases fail. Therefore a well-functioning overload system does not replace daily inspection, load chart, correct rigging or the rule to stop in doubt.
§Electric operation and a greener crane fleet.
In parallel with safety electronics, electric and hybrid cranes are advancing, especially in urban areas where noise and emissions from combustion engines are increasingly regulated. Electric tower cranes and battery-powered small mobile cranes are not yet the only option, but development points toward future crane operators increasingly needing to master both — classical hydraulics and the new electric systems.
