Fossil-free construction site: electric-powered machines and green operations

How the construction site switches from diesel to electric power

A traditional building site sounds and smells of diesel: excavators, dump trucks, generators and heaters run on fossil fuel from morning to evening. That habit is changing rapidly. More municipalities and building owners now require that machines on their projects be fossil-free or emission-free — and the Building Regulations have for the first time set a separate limit on emissions from the construction process itself.

§Why has the construction site come into focus?

Work machines at construction sites emit significant amounts of CO2 and particles and they do it close to people — both workers and neighbors. The transition is therefore about two things at once: less climate burden and a better work environment with less noise and emissions. Several municipalities including Copenhagen are working toward becoming one of the world's first CO2-neutral capitals and have as part of that tested requirements for fossil- and emission-free equipment in construction and engineering tenders.

§How the requirements scale in practice

The requirements are typically phased in because the market for electrically driven machines is still under development, especially for the heaviest tasks. A model seen in practice is to set strict requirements for light machines immediately, while heavy machines get a transition period.

§What do you see on a fossil-free site?

On a construction site in transition, you increasingly see battery-powered mini excavators, electric wheel loaders, battery-powered hand tools, and battery packs or solar cells instead of diesel generators for power on site. §The challenges are real.

The transition is not without obstacles. Electric-powered machines are often more expensive to purchase, even though they can be cheaper to operate. For the heaviest tasks — large excavators, cranes and trucks — there are still few electric alternatives on the market. And a construction site doesn't always have the power supply needed to charge multiple machines at the same time, which requires new planning of electrical connections early in the project.

§Requirements in the tender change who wins the task

When a municipality or a developer writes requirements for fossil-free or emission-free operation into their tender materials, it becomes part of the competition between contractors, not just a technical requirement. A contractor who already has electric machines and experience planning charging infrastructure stands stronger in bidding than one who first needs to transition after the contract is signed. This creates market pressure to invest in a green machine fleet early, rather than waiting until requirements become unavoidable everywhere.

§What does it mean for the individual employee?

For craftspeople on site the changeover is felt concretely: less noise and emissions make the working day healthier while new routines around charging and fuel require knowing the machines' power requirements and planning work accordingly. As more building owners and municipalities set requirements in their tenders knowledge of fossil-free operation becomes a skill widely sought-after in the industry.

It also requires new habits to work with battery-powered machines: the battery's range must be known, charging times must be included in the daily plan and you must get used to a machine not being able to refuel in five minutes like a diesel-powered one could. In return many find that electrically powered machines are easier to operate precisely because they respond faster and more evenly than combustion engines — a side benefit that often surprises those who are first skeptical of the switch.
