§Study guidance: Veterinary nurse

As a veterinary nurse you work closely with the veterinarian and are often the link to the owner. The trade requires precision hygienic discipline and the ability to handle animals safely and confidently. Understand the connection between observation documentation and treatment.

You must be able to do this

  • 01Perform hand hygiene cleaning disinfection and aseptic work.
  • 02Receive patients, record medical history and observe clinically.
  • 03Record Keeping Regulation requires anyone performing health-related tasks to document performed and planned work.
  • 04Handle and fix animals gently and safely.
  • 05Assist the veterinarian with examination treatment and surgery.
  • 06Reduce stress and ensure animal welfare throughout the visit.

Important concepts

  • 01Cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation
  • 02Asepsis and sterile field
  • 03Anamnesis and clinical observation
  • 04Record keeping provides overview of the active case, archiving documents the process for posterity
  • 05Restraint and fearless/gentle handling
  • 06Zoonosis and biosecurity

Good habits and preparation

Make hygiene and asepsis a reflex — most complications are prevented right here. Write down observations immediately and always separate what you see (observation) from what the vet assesses (diagnosis). Practice calm, predictable handling so animals become less afraid — it makes work both safer and better.
