Checklist: CNC startup and preparation

Control points from machine start to first approved item

Use this checklist each time a CNC machine is set up for a new task, or a new program is to be run for the first time. It gathers the control points that prevent the most common errors: wrong zero point, loose clamping and undetected collisions.

§Before startup

  • 01Check that the machine is lubricated and has completed its daily inspection
  • 02Check that correct tool is in the correct stations
  • 03Verify component drawing and program version against the work order
  • 04Review the program in simulation for collisions

§Clamping and zero point

  • 01Clean clamping and item for chips and oil
  • 02Clamp the component firmly and verify it cannot move during machining
  • 03Measure null point and confirm it against the drawing's reference point
  • 04Double-check tool lengths in the tie-rod

§First drive

  • 01Run the program in single block or at reduced speed the first time
  • 02Keep hand at emergency stop during first movements
  • 03Stop and measure the first item before series production starts
  • 04Approve first item against drawing dimensions before more are run
