As a tool maker you manufacture tool parts and assemble them into finished tools. The work starts with a drawing and ends with a tool that can make many identical parts with high precision.

It all starts with a drawing that specifies the dimensions and fit the parts must have. Reading a technical drawing correctly is a core competence — a misread dimension can ruin the entire tool.
§Processing
The parts are manufactured on machines — both manually operated and CNC-controlled. You remove material by, for example, turning, milling and grinding, until the part has the right dimensions. On CNC machines you program the sequence so the machine does the work precisely.

You measure all the time. A tool must fit together to tenths of a millimeter, so measuring equipment and control are a fixed part of the work, not something you do last.
§Assembly
When the parts are finished they are assembled into the finished tool. Here it shows whether the processing was precise enough: do the parts fit does the tool work – otherwise back to processing.
