Template: arrangement of your watchmaker's bench

How to dress for different seasons and work situations

Your bench is your workshop in miniature. How it is arranged determines both the quality of your work and how well your body holds up over the years. Use this template when you set up a new position or improve the one you have.

§Height and sitting position

  • 01Set the bench at a height where you can work without bending your neck far forward
  • 02Choose a chair that supports the back and can be adjusted
  • 03Support elbows and forearms so hands are steady.

§Light

  • 01Provide good general lighting in the room
  • 02Use an adjustable work lamp that doesn't glare or cast harsh shadows
  • 03Place the light so it hits the workpiece without disturbing your eyes

§Order and tools

  • 01Keep frequently used tools within reach without stretching
  • 02Use trays or mats that catch small parts
  • 03Keep the workbench clean so small parts don't disappear

When the bench fits you and the work you feel it in both speed precision and body. Take time with the setup – it pays for itself every single working day.
