Workshop hourly rate

What should my hourly rate be for workshop to stay together?

Answer: The hourly rate you write on a repair quote must cover your own wages, the workshop's fixed costs and a profit. But not all hours can be billed: time in the shop, customer chat, ordering parts, accounting and tidying up are also work time. The calculator works out the hourly rate needed based on an annual budget and the share of hours you realistically can bill. Use it when you assess whether you can establish yourself or when prices need adjusting.

Formula

Fakturerbare timer = arbejdstimer pr. år × fakturerbar andel

Omkostninger der skal dækkes = løn + faste omkostninger

Timepris ekskl. moms = omkostninger × (1 + overskud) ÷ fakturerbare timer

Timepris inkl. moms = timepris ekskl. moms × 1,25

Does not apply when

  • Spare parts and their margin are not included: they're added on top of the quote like in the calculator «Repair quote». Depreciation on expensive machines (timegrapher water tightness tester lathe) belongs under fixed overhead. Figures are your own budget standard values are just an example.

Step by step

  1. Sæt den løn, du vil have, inkl. pension og feriepenge.
  5. Læs timeprisen ekskl. og inkl. moms.

Typical errors

Examples from everyday life

Your wage per year incl. pension and holiday pay
420,000 kr
Fixed costs per year (rent, tools, insurance, software)
180,000 kr
Desired profit on top of costs
10 %
Working hours per year (after holidays and public holidays)
1,650 hours
Share of hours you can bill
65 %

Your wage per year incl. pension and holiday pay
380,000 kr
Fixed costs per year (rent, tools, insurance, software)
240,000 kr
Desired profit on top of costs
5 %
Working hours per year (after holidays and public holidays)
1,650 hours
Share of hours you can bill
55 %

Your wage per year incl. pension and holiday pay
420,000 kr
Fixed costs per year (rent, tools, insurance, software)
180,000 kr
Desired profit on top of costs
10 %
Working hours per year (after holidays and public holidays)
1,650 hours
Share of hours you can bill
80 %

Rule of thumb

Timepris ≈ alle årets omkostninger ÷ fakturerbare timer. 600.000 kr ÷ 1.000 timer = 600 kr.

How to check the answer
