Practical exam and oral examination — the path to the journeyman certificate
The journeyman's exam is the culmination of several years of school and apprenticeship. If you pass, you get your journeyman certificate — the official proof that you're a qualified craftsperson within your specialty. The exam is not just a formality but a real test of whether you can independently plan, execute and evaluate a piece of professional work according to the standards required in the trade.
§The education's progression
Woodworking trades' construction training consists of a basic course (GF1 and GF2) and a main course. The main course typically lasts around 3 to 3.5 years and alternates between school and apprenticeship in a company, where most of the time is spent as practical training on the apprenticeship place. Early in the main course you finally choose your specialty: carpenter, floor layer or thatcher.
§The practical exam
The practical part is the heart of the journey exam. Here the student must carry out a concrete piece of professional work within a set timeframe. The timeframe reflects the scope of the task and is different for the three specialties: for carpenter and floor layer the practical exam is 37 hours, while for roofer it is 28 hours. The work is assessed on planning, execution, precision and the quality of the finished result.

§The theoretical exam
Beyond the practical aspect, there is an oral, theoretical test. It typically lasts 30 minutes including grading (assessment) and has approximately 30 minutes preparation time. In the oral test, the student presents their work based on a case or task and also draws a random question which must be answered professionally. Here the understanding behind the craft is tested: material choice, construction, rules and work environment.

§After the journeyman certificate
Your journeyman certificate is not an ending, but a beginning. It gives you the right to work as a qualified tradesperson, to apply for higher education, and eventually to become an independent master. Some choose to earn one of the recognised qualifications and medals awarded to the best apprenticeship exams as an extra feather in their cap — but the most important thing is that the certificate proves that you master your trade.
