From floor plan to material list — the basis for construction without waste

Before the first plank is sawn, the battle is often already decided on the drawing board and with the tape measure. A precise measurement and a correctly read drawing is the prerequisite for materials to fit, for the schedule to hold, and for not buying too much or too little. Errors here propagate through the entire building and only get more expensive the later they are discovered.

§To read a building drawing

A building project consists of several types of drawing, each showing the building from its angle. You must be able to switch between them and understand how they relate to each other to form a complete picture of the construction.

  • 01Floor plan — building seen from above, shows rooms, dimensions and wall placement
  • 02Section drawing — a vertical section through the building showing heights, construction and layer composition
  • 03Facade drawing—the building seen from outside, shows appearance, windows, and roof form
  • 04Detail drawing — selected assemblies and nodes at large scale
  • 05Construction drawing — load-bearing parts, dimensions and structural relationships

§Measuring equipment

Drawings are drawn to scale — for example 1:50 or 1:100 — where one unit on the drawing corresponds to 50 or 100 units in reality respectively. You must be able to convert between drawing and reality and always check the marked dimensions rather than measuring directly on the drawing, which may be inaccurately reproduced. Dimensions indicate heights relative to a fixed zero point and are used to ensure that floors, baseboards, and terrain are at the correct levels.

§From drawing to material list

The material calculation converts the drawing into concrete quantities: how many rafters how many running metres battens how many sheets nails and screws. Areas and lengths are calculated from the drawing's dimensions divided according to the material's standard lengths and a reasonable waste is added. For sheets and boards waste is often calculated at a few percent and for roof and floor account is taken of overlap trimming and cutting.

§Setting out on site

When materials are on the site, the drawing must be transferred to reality. Layout with string, laser, and square ensures the building is square and matches the drawing's measurements. A classic check is the 3-4-5 method, where a triangle with sides 3, 4, and 5 units always has a right angle—a simple but reliable tool for checking if corners are square.

Measurement and drawing reading tie the whole construction process together. The craftsman who masters it wastes less material, makes fewer mistakes and delivers a result that fits the first time. It is a basic skill that all three specializations of the education build on.
