Safety rules and the certificates the trade requires
When you work with trains you work in one of the most safety-regulated environments there is. Tracks electricity and heavy vehicles do not forgive mistakes so a large part of your training is directed at rules procedures and the proofs that document that you may and can perform the tasks safely.
§Safety rules on the track
Travel and work in a track environment are governed by fixed rules for when and how you can move, how you protect yourself against moving material, and how you communicate with colleagues. You learn these rules thoroughly, because they are the prerequisite for being allowed to work in the area at all.
§Certificates and certifications
Through education you take a number of courses and certificates necessary for the work. The specific requirements may vary over time and between companies, but it is typically a matter of certificates related to moving safely, operating equipment and handling emergencies.

§Why so many rules?
It may sound like a lot to keep track of, but every rule has a reason: a train cannot brake quickly, a miscoupled braking system can have serious consequences, and a person on the track is vulnerable. The rules are what make the trade safe to practice — for yourself, your colleagues and the many passengers and cargo the trains carry.
