A working day in train fitting...
Brakes, couplings and control before departure
As a train preparer you help prepare trains before they depart. You move divide and assemble carriages in the station area couple them together and check that everything is in order before the train can be reported ready.
§Connection
When wagons must be coupled, they're connected mechanically and brake hoses linked. It must fit right—poor coupling or an unconnected brake hose is dangerous. So coupling is something you do with full attention every time.
§Brake check
The brakes are the most important system on a train. You check that the brakes work on the entire train not just at the front. A train must never be reported ready if there is doubt about the brakes.
- 01Wagons are coupled together mechanically
- 02Brake hoses are connected between cars
- 03The brakes are tested on the entire train
- 04Errors and wear are noted or reported
§Ranking
Shunting is moving wagons around the station area so the train is assembled correctly. It takes place close to heavy moving wagons, so extra attention and clear agreements about who does what apply here.
§Inspection and handover notice
Finally the train is checked one last time, and when everything is in order, it can be reported ready for departure or to be shunted further. The person who reports ready takes responsibility that the checks have been performed.
