§Study guidance: Technical designer

The craft is built on being able to translate between the physical world and a precise, legible drawing. You must be able to think spatially in 3D and communicate unambiguously in 2D. Train both in parallel — one strengthens the other.

Important concepts you should be able to

  • 02Line types and their meaning (visible, hidden, center, dimension lines)
  • 03Dimension notation, reference edge and dimension accumulation
  • 04Measuring equipment — proving precision
  • 05Umbrella (reflective/translucent)
  • 06BIM, object information and quantity extraction
  • 07Drawing title block, revision control, and drawing list

Good habits and preparation

Be consistent from the start: set units, templates and naming standards before you draw. Build models that can be changed without falling apart, and always check your work against references. Read others' drawings critically — it sharpens your own eye for what makes a drawing easy or hard to understand.

Where you can read more

Use the school's teaching material and your CAD program's own documentation and tutorials as the primary source. Professional standards for technical drawing and building documentation as well as the industry's IT and CAD manuals are central when you work on a project. Also ask your company's experienced draughters — much knowledge about naming standards and practice is company-specific.
