Ergonomics at the screen: your most important workplace.
Screening rules, layout and habits that prevent annoyance
The craft of technical designer doesn't wear on the back like a building trade — but long days with precision work in CAD strain neck, shoulders, forearms, and eyes. Therefore screen work is regulated separately: The Danish rules in the screen decree implement an EU directive from 1990 on minimum requirements for screen terminal work, and the Working Environment Authority's guidance on screen work (D.2.3) describes how the requirements are met in practice.
§Your rights when working at a screen
- 01Eye examination: If you work a significant part of the time at a screen, you have the right to an appropriate eye and vision examination with an optician or ophthalmologist — paid by the employer.
- 02Screen glasses: If the examination shows a need for glasses specifically for screen work, the employer must provide them at no cost to you.
- 03Variation: Work must be arranged so that screen work is regularly interrupted by other work or breaks.
- 04Equipment: Screen keyboard and desk must fit the task—intensive CAD work requires a fixed screen of proper size separate keyboard and mouse not a laptop alone.
- 05Home work: The rules generally also apply when you regularly work at a desk from home.
§Interior design of the CAD workstation
Good ergonomics begins with geometry — and it should be part of the trade. The top of the screen should be at about eye level or slightly below, at a distance of about an arm's length, so you neither bend your neck nor lean forward. If you work with two screens, the main screen is placed directly in front of you. The chair is adjusted so your feet rest on the floor and your forearms can support relaxed; a height-adjustable desk makes it possible to alternate between sitting and standing work throughout the day.
§Mouse arm and precision work
CAD work is mouse-heavy: thousands of small precise clicks every day. One-sided repetitive mouse work can cause pain in the hand forearm and shoulder — colloquially known as mouse arm. Prevention is variation: learn keyboard shortcuts so more commands move to the keyboard; switch between mouse 3D mouse and pen; keep the mouse close to your body so the shoulder doesn't work lifted; and let go of the mouse completely when you read or think. Small adjustments to grip and placement make a big difference over a working life.
§Breaks are part of the work
The Labour Authority points out that screen work should be interrupted regularly — how often depends on intensity. Concentrated modeling with tight deadlines requires more frequent breaks than mixed work with meetings and printing. Use natural breaks: fetch printouts standing take short meetings walking and let your eyes focus on something distant at regular intervals. Discomfort that is ignored tends to become chronic — tell your manager or occupational health and safety representative while the problem is still small.

A well-organized workplace is not pampering — it is tool maintenance. Your body is the instrument that guides the mouse through forty years of drawings and the rules on screen work exist because the effects are real and preventable. Set up properly from your first day as an apprentice so the good habits follow the rest of your career.
