How apprentice wages, agreements, and conditions work as a skilled worker — without empty talk about amounts
One of the big advantages of a vocational education is that you earn money while you learn. As a gut technician apprentice, you receive apprentice pay from the day your training contract comes into effect — and that applies both when you are at your apprenticeship, and when you are on school placement. §What is apprentice pay — and why does it increase?
Student wages are the wages your employer pays you while you are an apprentice. They are typically lower than a skilled worker's wages because you are still in training and not yet performing fully trained work. In return they usually increase during the program: the further you get, the more you can do and that is reflected in your wages. The idea is that your value to the company grows as your skills do.
§The agreement sets the framework
Your apprentice wages and conditions are not something an individual company makes up alone. They are negotiated between employers and the trade union in the industry via a collective agreement. The agreement sets minimum rates rules for working hours allowances and a number of other matters. This means as an apprentice you have an agreed base to stand on — and it is worth knowing before you sign.

§If you don't have an education agreement on the basic course
On the basic course, you are not necessarily employed yet. If you don't have an apprenticeship, you may instead be entitled to student aid according to the ordinary rules if you meet the conditions. If, on the other hand, you enter into an agreement with a company, the apprentice wage follows from the start of the agreement. So it can pay to get the apprenticeship position in place early.
§Terms as skilled
When you have passed the journeyman exam you are a skilled gut technician – and that shifts your terms. As trained you are no longer on apprentice wages but are paid as skilled according to the applicable collective agreement at the workplace. A journeyman certificate is also a strong card because the trade is small and the demand for people who can do the craft is real.
