Basic course, main course in levels and alternation between school and apprenticeship - all explained
If you want to be a dental technician, you should expect a multi-year course that combines school and work. It is a vocational education (VET) under the main subject Care, health and education, and the whole idea is that you alternate between going to school and training at a workplace — typically a dental laboratory. It is that alternation that makes you skilled: the theory only really makes sense when you stand with a model, a scanner or a crown in your hands yourself.
§The basic course: your gateway
If you come directly from 9th or 10th grade of primary school, you start on basic course 1. Here you work broadly and find out if a practical education is for you. Basic course 1 typically lasts half a school year. If more than half a year has passed since you left primary school, you can skip it and begin directly on basic course 2.
Basic course 2 is targeted at the dental technician trade itself and also lasts about half a school year. Here you meet the basic tasks in the trade: making teeth, working with dental materials and trying your hand at the digital workflow. You also have core subjects — Danish and natural science topics — and the course is completed with a basic course test.

§The main course is divided into levels
The main course itself is where the trade is really built up and it is step-based. Step 1 can last up to about 1 year and 11 months and alternates between training at the apprenticeship place and school stays. Step 2 comes on top and lasts another approximately 11 months. Together it gives a total course that with the basic course can stretch up to four years.
On level 1, you choose one of the profession's two profiles — removable prosthetics or fixed prosthetics. On level 2, you then take the opposite profile on top so you end up with both. Each level ends with an exam that measures both your theory and your practical craft.

As on most vocational apprenticeships the training place is central. This is where you turn theory into routine and become an actual professional. Begin exploring laboratories and companies early — the earlier you have a training agreement the more calm you get to concentrate on learning.
