Methacrylates and allergy risk – chemical safety with resins
Print resins and acrylic can sensitize skin — here's how to work safely
Acrylic (PMMA) has been part of the dental technology trade for over a hundred years, and in recent years 3D printing resins have really brought a whole family of related substances - methacrylates - back into focus. Methacrylates such as HEMA, Bis-GMA and TEGDMA are found in both classical denture acrylic and modern photopolymer resins, and several of them are labeled in the EU's common classification system (CLP) as skin sensitizers in category 1. This means that repeated unprotected skin contact can develop a contact allergy that does not go away, even after exposure stops.
§When is the risk greatest
The risk is greatest when the material is not yet fully cured or polymerized - this applies to mixed denture acrylic before it sets, and especially to printed resin immediately after printing, where the surface often has a thin layer of sticky, unreacted resin. This residual monomer is far more skin-irritating and allergy-causing than the fully cured material, and therefore UV light post-curing is an important step before handling the object without gloves.
§Gloves - the choice matters
Not all gloves protect equally well against methacrylates. Latex gloves provide reasonable physical protection, but several methacrylate monomers penetrate relatively quickly through thin latex, and latex itself can cause allergies in some. Nitrile gloves are therefore the preferred choice in modern dental laboratories: they provide better chemical resistance to precisely these substances and at the same time avoid the risk of latex allergy. Regardless of glove type, gloves should be changed as soon as they have been in contact with unmixed resin or monomer, and never reused for other tasks.

Chemical safety is not about being afraid of the materials you work with every day — it is about knowing them well enough to use them correctly. Most precautions are quick and cheap: right gloves, proper ventilation and full post-curing. On the other hand, the price of skipping them is potentially an allergy that follows you for the rest of your career.
