Checklist: Assistance with local anesthesia

Before, during, and after the injection

§Before the injection

  • 01Check records for known allergies and previous reactions to anesthesia
  • 02Prepare correct syringe, needle and anesthetic according to the dentist's instructions.
  • 03Check shelf life date on chosen anaesthetic.
  • 04Calmly prepare the patient for what will happen and what they will feel.

§During the injection

  • 01Keep an eye on the patient's reaction — paleness, dizziness or discomfort.
  • 02Keep calm and speak quietly to the patient during the injection itself.
  • 03Report immediately to the dentist if the patient shows signs of unexpected reaction.

§After injection

  • 01Dispose of needles directly in the needle box — never loose in ordinary waste.
  • 02Guide the patient that the lips/cheek are numb, so they don't bite or scald themselves.
  • 03Note in the journal which medication and what quantity has been used.
