Process template: Instrument cycle from dirty to clean zone
One-way flow step by step
§Principle
- 01Instruments move only from unclean to clean – never back.
- 02Keep clean and dirty zones clearly separated; avoid splashes from cleaning towards the clean.
- 03Treat all instruments as potentially infectious (standard precautions).
§Unclean zone.
- 01Receive and separate used instruments; wear gloves and eye protection.
- 02Clean – remove visible dirt, blood and residues (dishwasher or ultrasound).
- 03Disinfect (often thermally in the same machine).
§Clean zone
- 01Check instruments for damage and residues; lubricate where relevant.
- 02Pack in appropriate bags/cassettes with chemical indicator.
- 03Sterilize in the autoclave (class B for hollow/packaged instruments) according to the clinic's program.
§Inspection and storage
- 01Check that the indicator has changed and the package is intact and dry.
- 02Before documentation as part of self-monitoring.
- 03Store sterile, packaged instruments dry and clean for use.
