Studiemateriale

§Study material: get off to a good start as a roofer

This material brings together the most important concepts in the roofing trade so you have an overview to return to. Use it as reference alongside the practical work.

The key concepts

  • 01Membrane: the continuous, waterproof surface
  • 02Roofing felt: material based on bitumen, suitable for flat roofs
  • 03Foil: flexible membrane as alternative to cardboard
  • 04Base layer: substrate on which the upper membrane is laid.
  • 05Covering: sealing of edges, penetrations and transitions

Flat and sloped roofs

On sloped roofs, water is drained through the slope. On flat roofs and roofs with low slope, the entire surface must instead be tight, and this is where roof felt and films come into their own as a continuous membrane.

The layers in a roof

A roof is built up of several layers: insulation underlayer and the top membrane as well as strips and flashings at edges. Each layer has a task and a good result depends on them working together.

Safety you must always remember

  • 01Protect yourself from falls especially at edges and openings
  • 02Take fire hazard seriously during hot processes
  • 03Assess weather before working at height

How you practice best

Be thorough with preparation, and use extra care on joints and details. Learn to find leaks by thinking like water: it always seeks the weakest joint. A tight roof is the result of care in all respects.

Roofing is judged on tightness. It's not the prettiest roof, but the tightest one that is the best.
