Work process: your first year as a roofer apprentice
What you can expect — and how you get the most out of it
The first year is about getting to know the trade, building good habits and showing that you can be trusted. Here is a typical path through.
§The first weeks
- 01You get simple, but important tasks: carrying and preparing materials, tidying up, and learning site routines
- 02You learn to know the safety rules and access to the roof.
- 03You follow a journeyman closely and see how tasks are approached
§When you get more responsibility.
- 01You start performing limited parts of roof work yourself
- 02You learn to assess substrate and choose the right solution.
- 03You practice working closely, cleanly, and safely at height.
§The school stays
In the course of the year you come to school in periods. Use the school stays to get the theory in place and try out techniques at a calm pace. Take it back to the workplace — that is where it needs to stick.
§How you work with a patient in pain

- 02Accept feedback without being defensive
- 03Beware of yourself: use fall protection and think of your body
- 04Write down what you learn so you can return to it
