When should you have a training certificate before you may use the products
Some repair and surface treatment products in construction contain epoxy or isocyanates. Since 24 August 2023 there have been stricter training requirements from the Labour Authority before you can work with products containing these substances above a certain threshold.
The requirement applies to products where the content of monomeric isocyanates is at least 0.1% by weight. Both those who perform the work themselves and those who train or supervise the work must have completed the relevant education and have a valid training certificate.
There are two levels: a basic qualification which is mandatory for all work above the threshold and supplementary training for tasks with increased risk of exposure. According to the Occupational Health and Safety Authority supplementary training is not generally required for ordinary manual application with spatula brush roller or caulk gun at room temperature — but basic training is still a requirement regardless of the scope of the task.
Isocyanates and epoxy can cause serious and chronic allergic reactions in skin and airways. In the worst case, repeated exposure can develop an isocyanate asthma that doesn't go away, even after you've stopped working with the substances. The training requirement is designed to ensure you know the risk and use the products safely from day one.
