Transfer step by step — safe technique
How you handle crisis communication
Transfer is not about being strong. It is about technique, aids and getting the citizen to use their own strength. Use this fixed sequence so you do it safely every time — even when you are busy.
§Before you start
- 01Assess the citizen's own resources — what can he or she do?
- 02Choose the right aid: lift, slide plate, turntable or belt
- 03Set the bed at working height so you don't bend your back
- 04Tell the citizen what will happen and ask for participation
§During the transfer.
- 01Stand with good distance between your feet and bend at the knees
- 02Keep your back straight and work close to the citizen
- 03Let your legs and the aid do the work — not your back
- 04Avoid twisting the back; move your feet instead.
§Afterwards
Check that the citizen is lying or sitting well and safely, and that there is no drag on hoses, catheters or clothing. Mention if an aid is worn or missing, and note what needs to be documented. Good movement is a habit — the more often you do it right the more automatic it becomes.
