Drawing reading and tolerances
From line on paper to dimension on the part
A technical drawing is the blacksmith's and engineer's common language. It tells precisely how a workpiece should look how large it should be and how precisely it should be executed. Being able to read a drawing correctly is the prerequisite for making the correct workpiece — not just a workpiece.
§Projections and views
A three-dimensional item is typically drawn as several flat pictures viewed from different sides — for example front side and top. Together these views describe the item's full shape. Being able to think from flat pictures back to the spatial shape is a skill built through practice.
§Objectives
Dimensions are indicated with dimension arrows and dimension numbers and tell how large the part should be. A distinction is made between functional dimensions that are critical for the part to work and auxiliary dimensions. Angles, diameters, radii and hole placements are each indicated in their own way. A good drawing makes it unambiguous where each dimension should be taken from.

§Tolerances
Nothing can be made completely accurately, so a drawing specifies how much a dimension may deviate – the tolerance. A tight tolerance requires more precision and is more expensive to manufacture, while a wide tolerance gives more room for variation. Tolerances can be stated directly at the dimension or as a general statement for the entire drawing.
§Surfaces and finishing
The drawing often specifies requirements for surface roughness and may refer to finishing. A symbol indicates whether a surface should be machined and how fine it should be. It guides the choice of machining method and the finished product's appearance and function.
§From drawing to part
When the drawing is understood, the metalworker plans the sequence: which dimensions to secure first, where to measure along the way, and which tolerances are critical. A misunderstood drawing leads to a wrong part—so it's worth taking time to read it thoroughly before starting.
