Checklist: Preparation for journeyman exam
How to ensure you are ready when the task is assigned
The journeyman's exam won't surprise you if you prepare systematically. Use this checklist to keep track of what needs to be in order before the practical and oral exam begins.
§Several weeks before the exam
- 01Talk with your master about what types of tasks you can typically expect.
- 02Practice laying out a realistic timeline for a complete work task.
- 03Refresh hygiene and self-inspection rules so they sit on your spine.
- 04Make sure that your personal equipment — knives, apron, slip-resistant footwear — is in order.
§The week before the test.
- 01Make a short, honest application and CV — highlight your interest in the field.
- 02Review how you will explain your professional choices to the verbal exam.
- 03Check practical matters: attendance, transport, and what you must bring yourself
- 04Sleep well the last few nights – tired hands make more mistakes.
§The actual test day
- 01Arrive in good time with clean work clothes and sharp knives.

- 04Clean up and hand over the work area as you yourself would expect to take it over.
